Ogdoadic Mysteries

“God became man so that man might become God”

Athanasius von Alexandria

The Ogdoadic tradition of Christian mysteries arose from a fusion of ancient traditions from the eastern Mediterranean region with the mystical teachings of early Christian monasteries. In this system, which has been handed down over the centuries, initiation and ritual practice play a central role.

By initiation, the everyday reality of an ordinary individual is transcended, leading to a (more or less) permanent anchoring in a greater reality. In the process, the spiritual potentials latent within every human being are activated, so that the secrets hidden within the Mysteries can gradually be grasped. In this sense, secret has nothing to do with sectarian exclusivity, but rather with the ineffability of the sacred.

Through the spiritual exercises that follow, the initiate gradually becomes aware of the transformative process over a longer period of time and is able to integrate these new insights into their psyche. Realisation thus comes through direct experience rather than through accepting pre-established concepts as true.

Such knowledge of the efficacy of initiation and ritual also existed in the Early Church and led to the development of theurgical rituals. Theurgy aims to establish a direct connection with higher beings (or the Triune God) and to receive divine powers. Central to this is the idea that, by drawing closer to the divine and coming into harmony with it, a person refines their soul and attains a cosmic consciousness.

Such ‘spiritual technologies’, developed over millennia in all advanced civilisations, ultimately lead, in an objective manner, to specific insights with a subjective character. This constitutes a genuine science of the sacred with a clearly defined methodology.

Throughout the ages, small communities (circles, orders, societies) have been formed in various places to create an organisational framework for the transmission of this sacred knowledge. The initiates of the Ogdoadic Mysteries lead a completely normal life and remain integrated into their respective family and social environments.

In contrast to a world-denying, ascetic orientation, a "pan-en-theistic" view of God and His creation is emphasised. God is understood here as living transcendence, which reveals itself in His creation as eternal becoming: ‘One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.’ (Ephesians 4:6)

Timeless wisdom must, however, always be adapted to the respective cultural context in order to make it accessible to future generations. The non-public teachings and ritual practices of the Ogdoadic tradition of Christian mysteries are conveyed through direct exchange and in stages. This enables the initiate to progress safely and at their own pace.
